Voice is the path in.

Sing the spirit calling.

Most adults stop singing sometime in elementary school. As a voice teacher, singer, and conductor of choirs, I want to reassure you that everyone can sing. EVERYONE. In over thirty years of teaching, I have heard many people tell me that they couldn’t sing, but in all that time, only one of them actually couldn’t sing. She had Down Syndrome. But she sang with gusto and enthusiasm, inspiring all my students.

Singing vibrates our whole body from the inside out. Voice is the soul print, our barometer of truth. In the voice, we can hear how we are feeling below the conscious mind. Are we tired, hungry, angry, getting sick, out of breath, or happy? Singing together, we drop the stress of our lives and open to each other. We create community. We belong.

There are many places to sing – in church choirs and community choirs. At Concord Community Music School in Concord, we have a chorus for every age. Starting with music and movement for infants and young children, moving into Purple Finches Youth Chorus, Sunflower Singers for adults with developmental disabilities, Canterbury Singers for teens and adults singing Shaker music, and the two choirs I direct – Northern Lights, a small women’s ensemble, and Songweavers, which fills me with joy every week.

Sing. Join a group in your area or come to Concord. Sing in the grocery store. Sing making dinner. Sing in the shower. Sing out. Speak up. Let the truth of your voice vibrate your body and soul - awake and alive!
